Alewives Class Offerings Summer 2008


HOW DO I SIGN UP?

To sign up for a class, either call us at 207-563-5002 or stop by the shop in person. 
PAYMENT IS REQUIRED AT THE TIME OF REGISTRATION. 

In order to reserve your space in a class, we must first receive your class payment. You may pay us in person at the shop, call us with a credit card number or mail us a check. Once we have received your payment, you will be given a materials list for your class. Our classroom can only accommodate up to 8 people, so it is advisable to sign up as early as possible. In the event that you are unable to attend your class, please let us know as soon as possible so that we may notify the next person on the waiting list. In the event that we cancel a class, you will be notified of the
cancellation as soon as possible and issued a full refund or a store credit.

Amy Butler’s Birdie Sling
with Rhea Daiute
Saturday, July 12 and 19, 9:30 - 12:00
Perfect for beginners who want to start with a small project. In the first class we will learn how to cut out fabrics and read a pattern. In the second, we will sew the bag together. The Birdie Sling is slightly
oversized: a great bag to throw all of your stuff in, head out the door and go.
Cost: $30, plus materials

Braided Rag Rug Workshop
with Rhea Daiute and Rina Ripley

This is a workshop that requires no sewing and no prior experience, perfect for ALL skill levels. Using a rug frame (make your own or purchase one from us), students will learn how to string their frame, how to cut scraps to use in the rug and finally how to braid and weave the rug together into a sturdy, beautiful piece that uses up all of
your excess fabric.
Cost: $20, plus materials

Fabric Floorcloth Workshop

Also a workshop that requires no sewing and no prior experience, perfect for ALL skill levels. Treat fabric like paper as you cut and glue your way to a beautiful and durable fabric-covered floorcloth that will
last for years and years. Complete kits are available at the shop, although students will be required to bring their own acrylic craft paint.
Cost: $15, plus materials

Turning Twenty
with Rhea Daiute
Sundays, August 3,10,17,24, 1:00 - 3:30
Perfect for beginners. Turn twenty “Fat Quarters” into a bed-sized quilt that is simple, encouraging and really shows off any genre of today’s beautiful fabrics. Students will learn how to use a rotary cutter, how to “chain-sew” and how to accurately piece blocks and borders together. Many kits available at the shop. Sooner or later, everybody “Turns Twenty.”
Cost: $60, plus materials

Amy Butler’s Weekender Bag

The Weekender Bag is one of our most popular patterns, and no one can seem to make just one. Perfect for intermediate sewers, students will learn to make and insert their own bias-covered piping and how to insert a zipper. A great bag for an overnight getaway, a stylish carry-on, or an
oversized everyday bag.
*** This class requires that you bring your own machine that can sew through heavy materials and has it’s own zipper foot***

Crocheted Round Rug Workshop
with Maylene Mitchell
Saturday, August 9, 2:00 - 4:00
Another one of our classes that requires no sewing and no prior xperience. Perfect for all levels. Students will learn how to cut their own continuous fabric strips, how to join strips together and how to crochet and chain fabrics into a round rug. Pre-cut batik “yarn”- perfect for this
project- is available at the shop in a wide selection of colors.
Cost: $15, plus materials

Winding Ways
with Susan Johnson
Wednesdays, September 3,10,17,24,
9:30 - 12:00
This class is perfect for intermediate sewers.
Winding Ways students will learn curvedseam
piecing and how to stitch their
blocks into a bed-sized quilt. This pattern
looks great in any genre of fabric: choose
many different fabrics for a scrappy look or
choose as little as 2 contrasting fabrics for
a modern, graphic look.
Cost: $60, plus materials

Bento Box
with Rhea Daiute
Mondays, September 8,15,22,29
6:00 - 8:30
Perfect for beginners. The Bento Box pattern uses 20 “Fat Quarters” and can easily be made into a larger quilt if desired. Students will learn rotary cutting, “chainsewing” and how to accurately piece blocks into a quilt top. The Bento Box pattern works with any genre of fabric and stitches together quickly for a simple yet stunning quilt. Many kits available.

Liesl+Co Backpack Tote
with Susanne Grant
Saturdays, September 13 & 20
9:30 - 12:00
Perfect for intermediate sewers. The backpack tote is really two bags in one: use as a handbag tote or convert the straps and use as a backpack. Students will learn how to insert “O”-Rings, rivets, a magnetic snap and a zipper, all of which are available at the shop.
***This class requires students to bring their own sewing machine with a “walking foot”***
Cost: $30, plus materials

FREE SEWING LOUNGE

Sewing Lounge - FREE!
with Rhea Daiute
Every Wednesday and Friday night
from 4:00-8:30pm
Sewing Lounge is a perfect time to get caught up on old projects, browse fabrics for a new project, or to get a little extra help. During this time, an instructor will always be available to answer your questions and our tools, such as rotary cutters, mats, rulers, irons, even sewing machines, are available for you to use. Bring food, bring a friend, make new friends, have a great time. There is a whole community of sewing gals out there waiting to meet you!!!

PRIVATE LESSONS - Available at any time!

Cost: $15 per hour, plus materials
For those of you who want the most for your money! We are now offering private lessons at an hourly rate, during which time you can work on the project of your choice. Even if you don't have a specific idea in mind, we can help you choose an introductory project. This is an excellent way for beginners (children, teens or adults) to learn quilting or sewing.
